I turned down free money today.

Yep, you heard me. I turned down free money today. Money that was just lying there waiting for me to take it, I thought about it but decided to walk on by.

Do I have your attention? Because it’s money we are talking about here. The rich get richer, that’s the law of the land but I’m above it do you want to know how?

Coppers are for Closers Only

I was walking along the street today and came across a penny on the pavement. Normally I would pick it up but I suffer from odd sharp pains in my kidneys sometimes and knew that if I bent over to pick it up then I would probably get the all too familiar stabbing pain in my side. It was just not worth it.

I don’t know the cause bit it’s anything from dehydration (goes away if I drink a lot of water) to gout (I’m making it fashionable again). Whatever it is, I don’t like it.

No pain and no gain.

Are you interested? I know you are.

I’ve never been shy to pick up money off the ground. I found a £50 note in a gutter once in London – probably a case of private vice, GFF’s benefit. Plus a fiver in a museum earlier this week – recycled into the gift shop.

But picking up money is just something that most people seem to shy away from. But looking after the pennies is normally a good way to look after the pounds but today I just could not and would not. The value of avoiding a few seconds of pain outweighs the benefit of a penny. Had it have been a pound, I’d have had no hesitation. Fifty P… I really don’t know.

Have you made your Decision for FIRE?

Along the lines of “Get Rich Once”, you shouldn’t take unnecessary risks in making money and once you have enough, you should definitely try to keep what you have. You’d think that this advice is around investing in that wonderful sounding cryptocurrency the nice man who cold called you about but sometimes risk is just about danger to your health and not wealth.

And Action

Sometimes doing nothing takes courage, especially when you see others getting rich. The thing is that you don’t see much competition for picking up pennies – but when it comes to investment fads or consumer hysteria – you see it all the time.

There’s a world of investment opportunities out there and ways to spend your money. They are sitting out there waiting to take your money money. Are you going to give it? Are you man enough to give it?

ABC – Always Be Closing

Only One Thing Counts in this life and that was to get towards my FIRE numbers as fast as possible. Once you close that gap between what you have and what you need, you can change perspective a bit. The analogy that I like is from the Escape Artist, and hitting your FIRE target is like crawling out of your tunnel from prison camp – now free from the confines of internment you are free! But you still need to keep moving! Plus like the Great Escape, just because you are on the outside doesn’t mean they can’t catch you.

GFF the Hero

I know what you are thinking:

“GFF, you are such a hero, you are so rich, how you are coming down to waste your time writing for a bunch of bums like your readers? You don’t even have a snazzy investment programme for sale or any sales funnel to monetise – I’m mean, come on!”

The truth is that I’m here on a mission of mercy to help you guys. I’ve been on the road to Financial Independence for 20 years now. Maybe I’m wise, maybe making analogies about pennies and bad backs then connecting it to universal truths is tenuous at best and at worst just plain stupid.

It takes brass balls to reach Financial Independence. Go and do likewise. The money’s out there, you pick it up, it’s yours. But at some point you’ll have enough to not need to break your back in the pursuit of coppers.

Thanks GFF.

  1. “See a penny, pick it up. All day long, you’ll have good luck!” Goes the saying I learned as a kid.

I don’t believe in the luck part but I still pick up pennies (and other coins) if I can do so without getting my hands too dirty – it’s money, innit!

“Give the penny to a friend, then your luck will never end!”

This I’ve done on the occasion I’ve been with someone when I picked up said penny. Again, the luck part hasn’t come true!
